Текст А: History was made in 2008 as the New Zealand government signed over the ownership of huge areas of forest land to seven Maori tribes. The deal is part of efforts to compensate Maoris for land taken away from them by British colonizers in the nineteenth century. The two sides have been negotiating since the mid-1980s to settle historic disputes. The seven tribes have more than 100,000 members. They will manage the land to make sure it provides them with a sustainable future.

Текст B: People have sold many strange things on the Internet auction site eBay, but never a whole life — until now. Ian Usher, a 44-year-old British man is selling his “entire life.” This includes his three-bedroom house and all its contents, his job, hobbies, and even his friends. The furniture in the house has memories attached to it. Mr Usher explained he wanted to make a “clean break” and make a “fresh start” after splitting up with his wife.

Текст С: Flip-flops, the slip-on, slip-off footwear most of us wear to the beach, may be bad for our health. Walking in flip-flops can trigger aches and pains all over the body, not just make our feet sore. It goes so far as to say that flip-flops are the most damaging type of shoes for our health, even worse than high heels. When people walk in flip-flops, they alter their gait, which can result in problems and pain from the foot up into the hips and lower back.

Текст D: The Brazilian government has published photographs of an isolated community of indigenous people living in the Amazon rainforest. There are worries that the tribes-people will catch diseases they have never experienced before. The newly-found tribe is surely one of the last remaining peoples on Earth never to have had contact with modern life. The name of the tribe and its exact location are being kept a secret. The only information released so far is that the tribe lives in a remote part of the rainforest near the Brazil-Peru border.

Текст E: Children aged 6–12 can learn important social skills in virtual worlds. Virtual worlds can be valuable places where children rehearse what they will do in real life. Children interacting with others online and exploring web worlds was better for kids than passive pastimes like watching TV. Kids adopt different roles when they venture through the virtual world. The virtual world is a safe place for them to rehearse real-life situations without the negative or painful consequences of the real world.

Текст F: Poems written over a hundred years ago by William McGonagall, known as “the world’s worst poet,” were sold at an auction in Scotland for over $12,000. Despite his unfortunate title, McGonagall’s work sold for more than a collection of Harry Potter books signed by its author J. K. Rowling. Many of the poet’s works were also autographed. McGonagall’s poems were so bad that when he read them in public, people threw eggs and rotten fruit and vegetables at him.

Текст G: The British government has released over 1,000 pages of secret files on UFO sightings to the public. It is the first-time records on flying saucers and other unexplained objects have been made available. Britain’s National Archives put the documents online following requests from members of the public. Britain’s freedom of information laws meant the documented reports could no longer be kept a secret. Officials said that the names of many individuals who claimed they saw UFOs have been blacked out to respect their privacy.
