Тексты:

Текст A: Making schoolchildren take tests is harming students’ interest in science, as well as having a negative impact on kids’ natural curiosity. Researchers warned that too many schools were teaching science just so students could pass tests. There is a lot of pressure for students to get to better schools. The experts said there was very little real science teaching going on that encouraged students to find out things for themselves. Learning by doing, experimenting and seeing should be at the heart of all physics, chemistry and biology lessons.

Текст B: Historians in England have uncovered evidence that baseball may not be as American as apple pie. The BBC reports that baseball was played in England in 1755, more than twenty years before America’s independence in 1776. This may come as a shock for lovers of America’s national game, who believe baseball is an American creation. A recently discovered diary is “proof” that Englishmen were hitting home runs long before their cousins across the Atlantic. The Surrey History Centre confirmed the diary was authentic.

Текст C: Have you ever wondered why some children are so much better with numbers than other kids? New research shows that children who have well-educated mothers do better at maths at the age of 10. The study concludes that the education of a child’s mother can boost the mathematical abilities of her child. In particular, a child who plays number games with his or her mother at home is more likely to do well in maths tests.

Текст D: Scientists say they are a step closer to developing materials that could make people invisible. Researchers have found a way to cloak humans and objects using special materials that redirect light around things. The team developed a set of artificial “meta-materials” on a microscopic scale that is measured in billionths of a metre. The researchers said the special “fishnet structure” of the nano-sized objects do not absorb or reflect light, which makes them seem invisible. In the future, scientists could make “invisibility clothing” to hide people and large objects.

Текст Е: Researchers say they have developed a pill that makes you fit without exercising. Scientists tested a new drug on genetically engineered “marathon mice” that could run non-stop for hours. They then developed a pill that could reproduce the positive effects of the running. The pill helps cells burn fat quicker and at the same time boosts energy levels. The new discovery could benefit those who do not get the recommended 40 minutes of exercise per day.

Текст F: Authorities in Canada had to deal with the escape of 12 million bees. The bees buzzed off after the truck that was carrying them overturned. Most of the insects stayed close by, but enough were on the loose to cause a potential hazard to the public. The police told people to stay indoors and keep their windows closed. People are not at risk as long as they keep their distance. People working at the scene to recover the bees were wearing full protective gear.

Текст G: The European Union is cracking down on shady websites that are wrongly selling or charging for mobile phone services. The EU Consumer Commissioner has warned the public that they may be paying hidden charges for ringtones, news feeds, video games and wallpaper. Many sites are cheating people out of their money, especially trend-conscious teenagers, who like to keep up to date with the latest phone fashions. An EU investigation into 500 sites discovered that 80 per cent were misleading consumers.
