Текст A: The Danish toy maker Lego lost a court battle over a trademark on its bricks. For fifty years, it had enjoyed protection from rival toymakers. Lego had a special copyright. However, rival toy company Mega Brands started fighting Lego’s trademark in 1999. Lego argued its iconic bricks were unique, and different from others around the world. The judges disagreed and decided that the shapes of Lego’s bricks served a clear and useful purpose and could not be protected. They were too ordinary to deserve a copyright.

Текст B: Amazon.com decided to cut back on the packing materials it uses in its boxes and parcels. Customers will no longer have to spend half an hour trying to free the books or CDs from the box. Amazon calls its new idea the “Frustration-Free Packaging Initiative.” It will help the environment and also mean we need one less garbage bag to throw the packaging away. The company is working to find solutions for using less packaging and saving customers’ money. The initiative initially was for only 19 items.

Текст C: The rate of diabetes in the USA has almost doubled in the past decade. Experts say that one of the biggest reasons for the rise in diabetes is the increasing levels of obesity. Americans are eating more fast food and getting less exercise. This is a recipe for disaster and the exact conditions that lead to diabetes. A diabetes specialist warned the numbers of new cases would continue to rise sharply because Americans showed no signs changing their eating and exercise habits.

A study found family members were keeping in regular contact today more than ever before. And this is all down to e-mail, chat, our cellphones and text messaging. Years ago, it took a long time to write a letter, then find an envelope and go to the post office to buy a stamp and post it. Today we write mails which are sent in an instant.

Текст E: Three skydivers made history over Mount Everest on October 5th, 2008 by being the first people to parachute above the world’s highest mountain. The parachutists, from New Zealand, Britain and Canada, had trained for many years to make their jumps. Their plane flew about 150 metres above Everest’s peak when they leapt out. They had to wear oxygen masks and parachutes that were larger than usual to help them in the thin air.

Текст F: Mexican Manuel Uribe was in the Guinness Book of Records in 2006 after breaking the human weight record. Special weighing scales showed he weighed 560 kg. He spent his whole life living on his bed, eating huge meals and watching TV. He decided enough was enough and that he wanted to change his life. He also wanted to marry his longtime girlfriend, Claudia Solis. Uribe went on a crash diet and lost almost half his body weight. He lost a whopping 250 kg and has slimmed down to a lighter 310 kg.

For those who really want to get away from it all, a new holiday destination has sprung up — Antarctica, this new hotspot, or freezing zone. Tourism on Antarctica has been increasing dramatically. The growing numbers are having a negative effect on the pristine environment of the South Pole. To combat this, researchers suggested limiting the number of tourists allowed to visit Antarctica.
