Тексты:
Текст A: A woman in Southern California gave birth on January 27th, 2009 to octuplets. It is only the second time in US history a mother has delivered eight babies. Doctors said the six tiny boys and two girls were all doing well and breathing on their own. They added that the chances of having eight children naturally are unbelievably rare. Twins occur in roughly 1 in 80 births; triplets in 1 in 6,400 births. Thelikelihood of octuplets being born is 1 in 20 trillion pregnancies.
Текст B: A married Indian couple have escaped punishment for kissing in public. The 28-year-old man and his 23-year-old wife were arrested by Delhi police. They were charged with obscenity in a public place. Public displays of affection are largely taboo in India. However, in court, the judge decided the young couple’s kiss did not break the law and that they did nothing wrong. It is acceptable for young couples to hold hands in public places though. Anything more romantic than this simple act could mean three months in prison.
Текст C: Lately we saw the return of one of the world’s best-loved fi ctional characters, Winnie-the-Pooh. The loveable bear was created by British writer A. A. Milne and first appeared in a book in 1926. Milne only wrote two novels about Pooh’s adventures, the last being ‘The House at Pooh Corner’ in 1928. Eighty years later, those in charge of the Pooh name allowed the publication of a sequel. The third book was called ‘Return to the Hundred Acre Wood’. The Pooh books have been
translated into 50 languages.
Текст D: It was in 1968 that computer visionary Douglas Engelbart showed off his new invention to an audience of 1,000 at a technology conference in California. Engelbart’s revolutionary ‘pointing device’ was made of wood and had two wheels built into the bottom. It was originally designed to highlight text on a written document. Engelbart wowed onlookers by demonstrating how text could be selected, copied and pasted. Engelbart said he always wondered why the term ‘mouse’ never changed into a more technical word after it became a commercial success.
Текст E: Human-made noise pollution in the Earth’s oceans and seas is becoming a serious threat to marine wildlife. Scientists report that there is hardly an underwater place left where marine mammals can live in peace and quiet. Dozens of species of whale, dolphin, turtle and other creatures rely on sound to communicate, find mates and hunt for food. Environmentalists say noise from shipping, military sonar, oil and gas surveys, offshore construction and marine sports has reached dangerous levels for sea life.
Текст F: Having a bad boss could be bad for your heart. This is the conclusion of a Swedish study on management styles and health. The researchers compared the data with the results from questionnaires about senior managers. The questions asked workers if they thought their boss was considerate, communicated well and offered positive feedback. Other questions looked at how much work bosses gave to workers and how well they outlined their goals. The research team found that workers who respected their bosses were healthier and had fewer heart problems.
Текст G: Worried about getting old? Wondering how to stop going grey, or white, or silver? Scientists have discovered the drug the body uses to give our hair its natural colour. They hope they can recreate this drug and use it to prevent people’s hair from turning white. The goal is to make a shampoo that contains the drug so that our hair will stay its natural colour throughout our life. This would save us a fortune in hair dyes and treatments, and keep us all looking ten years younger.
