Тексты:

Текст A: NASA has successfully launched a rocket carrying a planet-hunting telescope. The powerful Kepler telescope will search for planets si milar to the Earth. Scientists believe there are good chances of finding a planet like ours somewhere out there in the galaxy. There are billions and billions of stars in the heavens. If one planet is the right distance from one of these stars, then conditions might be right to support life. The planet’s atmosphere should neither be too hot nor too cold.
The planet would also need water.

Текст B: The world will soon know who will get the “best job in the world.” The position is for a caretaker to live on and look after a tropical island off the coast of Queensland, Australia. Duties include relaxing on the island and writing a blog to promote the area. Other responsibilities are to feed the fish, clean the pool and collect the mail. The successful applicant will get a salary of nearly US$100,000 for the six months. Unsurprisingly, over 35,000 people applied for the job.

Текст C: Some of the oldest words in the English language are “I”, “we”, “who”, “two”, “three” and “fi ve.” Strangely, the word “one” came some time after the word “two.” This is what researchers from Reading University say. They used special computer software to analyze how old English words were and to track their changes. Lead researcher Dr. Mark Pagel said that one day we might have a basic Stone-Age English phrasebook. If a time traveller wanted to go back in time, they could probably draw up a little phrasebook.

Текст D: New research says it is unhealthy to live in areas with lots of fast food restaurants. A study said the people who live within walking distance of fast food restaurants have a 13 per cent higher chance of having a stroke. The team compared the stroke victims’ social status with how close they lived to the restaurants. The stroke is mainly the result of unhealthy eating. A diet that has a large amount of fast-food and other junk food increases the chances of having this health issue.

Текст E: The two child stars from the hit movie “Slumdog Millionaire”, Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Ismail, actually live in the Mumbai slums where the movie was filmed. The movie tells the story of how a teenager from one of the poorest parts of India becomes a millionaire. They are already getting many enquiries from India’s film studios about acting in Bollywood movies. “Slumdog Millionaire” director Danny Boyle said he was very excited for the two young stars.

Текст F: Scientists are a step closer to finding a cure for the common cold. The simple colds we all get several times a year are one of science’s mysteries. Researchers have worked for centuries to find a remedy. New research has unlocked the genetic code for 99 different types of cold which were separated into 15 different branches. The next step is to identify the things these branches have in common. Once scientists have done this, they can work on producing anti-cold drugs.

Текст G: A 56-year-old was the first woman to swim across the Atlantic Ocean. Jennifer Figge climbed out of the water in Trinidad to write her name in the record books. She left the Cape Verde Islands near Africa’s west coast. Her original plan was to swim in a straight line to the Bahamas. However, bad weather forced her to change direction and she had to swim an extra 1,600 kilometres to Trinidad. She spent almost a month in the water, swimming for up to eight hours at a time.
