Тексты:
Текст A: Brazilians are furious over 1,400 tonnes of British garbage arriving at its ports. The stinking waste included toilet seats, dirty diapers, leaking batteries and used syringes. It was destined for Brazilian waste recycling companies. The recyclers were angry over the contents as they were expecting only recyclable plastic. Public anger over the issue increased when the police found thousands of dirty toys in a container with a note in Portuguese that said: “These toys should be washed before being given to poor Brazilian children.”
Текст B: A Chinese bride has set a new world record for wearing the longest wedding dress. Lin Rong, a 25-year-old schoolteacher, walked down the aisle wearing the record-breaking 2.2 km gown at her wedding in China’s Jilin province. It took the 200 wedding guests more than three hours to stretch out the 2,162-meter-long train. The special dress was handmade by the groom's family. Lin’s new husband Zhao Peng said he wanted to show how much he loved her but didn’t want to spend money on a gorgeous wedding banquet.
Текст C: The reading of facial expressions may not be universal. This is the conclusion of researchers from Glasgow University in Scotland. They report that people from different cultures read facial expressions differently. In particular, they said there were big diff erences between the way Westerners and East Asians interpret facial expressions. The study suggests East Asians focus mostly on people’s eyes to read an emotion and neglect the mouth, but Europeans and Americans scan the whole
face, which means that they look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure.
Текст D: An Australian scientist says his country needs an extra couple of seasons. And he isn’t joking. Dr. Tim Entwisle thinks that Australians should stop thinking there are four seasons. He said this idea was “inherited” from Britain centuries ago. Dr. Entwisle said Australia really has at least five or six seasons. Entwisle suggested some names for the new seasons. He proposed “sprummer” as the season between spring and summer, while “sprinter” would cover the post-winter, early-spring period.
Текст E: Would you get angry if you got e-mails with lots of capital letters? A New Zealand boss saw red after one of his employees had used block capitals in e-mails to colleagues. Vicki Walker, an accountant in Auckland, was fired after her co-workers complained about her use of caps. They said they found the e-mails “confrontational”. Bosses dismissed Ms Walker for causing “disharmony” in the workplace. Walker took the company to court. She won the case, and the employer had to pay her $11,500 in damages and lost pay.
Текст F: The Pacific Island nation of Samoa has switched from driving on the right side of the road to the left. Samoa becomes the first country since the 1970s to do this. The government made the switch to bring Samoa in line with Australia and New Zealand. One benefit of the new change for Samoans is that it is now cheaper to import cars with steering wheels on the right. The newer, imported cars are more modern and more environmentally friendly.
Текст G: There are many new ways of making friends in today’s world. The best known among them is meeting new pals online. The Japanese are doing things a little differently. There is a growth in rent-a-friend agencies. The only catch is that the friends you meet will not become your true friends. You simply rent one when you need one for a specific occasion. The friends for rent are professional fakers. They will pretend to be anyone you want them to be.
