Horses have been domesticated for thousands of years and have played an important role in human history. In the 19th century, they were extensively used in transportation, agriculture, and warfare. They were preferred over other animals because of their strength, speed, and agility. Many people think that animals, including horses, are colorblind and only see in shades of gray. This is not true. Horses do see color, but they may not see it as vividly as we do. This is because they can only see two of the three visible wavelengths in the light spectrum, which is somewhat similar to the way colorblind humans see. Your horse doesn't see the color red, but it can see blues and greens, so the red apple or the bright orange carrot you offer as a treat may actually appear brownish or greenish to your horse.
Horses have the largest eyes of any land mammal. They have almost 360-degree vision due to their eye position on the side of the head but have blind spots directly in front and behind them at the base of their tail. If they move their head slightly around, they can then see in that blind spot. This is why horses can so accurately kick something that walks behind them.
