The indigenous peoples of Canada are known as First Nations or Indigenous Peoples. The term "Canada" originates from a word in one of the local Indigenous languages, meaning "village." These diverse Indigenous tribes had inhabited the land that is now known as Canada long before the arrival of Europeans in the 11th century. As more Europeans arrived in the 16th century, they established trade relationships with the Indigenous peoples, exchanging manufactured goods for furs and other native products. Over the next 250 years, European settlers gradually displaced and marginalized the Indigenous populations.

The arrival of European settlers in Canada occurred in several waves. The first were the French, followed by the English, and these two groups are considered the founding nations of Canada. In a war in 1760, France lost its part of the territory to Britain, but many French-speaking colonists remained in Canada. The ongoing effort to preserve their language and culture has been a significant theme in Canadian history, and in recent years, there has been a movement advocating for greater independence from the rest of Canada.
