Japan, situated in East Asia, is an archipelago located in the North Pacific Ocean adjacent to the Asian mainland. It is composed of four primary islands and numerous smaller ones. The bustling metropolis of Tokyo serves as the nation's capital and largest city.

The Japanese landscape is predominantly characterized by mountains, which encompass approximately 75 to 80% of the country. Throughout history, these mountains posed challenges to transportation, impeding the economic progress of isolated regions. However, with the developement of modern infrastructure such as tunnels, bridges, and air travel, the mountains are no longer an obstacle. The Japanese people have long admired the scenic allure of their mountains, as reflected in their art and literature. Presently, many mountainous areas are safeguarded within national parks to preserve their natural splendor.

The majority of Japan's population resides in plains and lowlands situated primarily along the lower reaches of major rivers, on the gentle slopes of mountain ranges, and along the coastline. This concentration of inhabitants has made Japan one of the most densely populated countries in the world.
