   Roller coasters are thrilling amusement park rides that have been around since the late 19th century. The first roller coaster was built in France in 1817, and the first roller coaster in the United States was built in 1884. Since then, roller coasters have become a staple of amusement parks around the world. 

   Roller coasters are usually made up of a track with hills and valleys. As the car moves along the track, it is propelled by gravity and momentum. Riders experience a rush of adrenaline as they go over the hills and valleys. Roller coasters can reach speeds of up to 150 miles per hour and can go upside down, making them one of the most exciting amusement park rides. 

   The modern roller coaster was invented in 1865 by LaMarcus Thompson. He patented the design for his Switchback Railway, which was the first roller coaster in the United States. His invention revolutionized amusement parks, and soon other amusement parks began to build their own roller coasters.
