Time travel

Doctor Who is arguably one of the most famous stories about time travel. 30                           The Time Machine and Back to the Future, it has explored the temptations and paradoxes of visiting the past and voyaging into the future.

In the TV show, the Doctor travels through time in the Tardis: an advanced craft that can go anywhere in time and space. The Tardis is super-smart and even 31                           of empathy, it seems. With the exterior 32                           an antiquated British police telephone call box, it appears to contain at least the volume of a roomy house, if not more.

Time travel is fundamental to Doctor Who. It isn’t fixed, and you can rewrite history, every single line. But what about in the real world? Answering this question 33                           understanding how time actually works – something physicists are far from certain about. So far, what we can say with confidence is that travelling into the past is either wildly difficult or absolutely impossible.

But what’s the trickiest thing about travelling into the past? This all comes 35                           to what’s known as the Grandfather paradox. If time travel into the past were possible, then you could travel to a time before your parents were born and kill your grandfather. Then you would simply never be born, let 36                           travel into the past to kill your grandfather. Thankfully, such paradoxes seem not to occur in the real world or, if they do, there must be someone like the Doctor, who travels around ironing them all out!
