The Mandela effect
Memory is a tricky thing. With so much happening all around us, there’s no way to take in and remember everything we 30 , and sometimes we don’t recall details of what we do remember correctly. We can also have a completely different 31 of events than someone else who experienced the same thing. This can happen on a global scale and often with extreme differentiations. To the people holding these false memories, their individual impressions feel so real to them that they are unable to 32 that their memory is wrong, even when there is concrete evidence that proves otherwise, often expressing shock, confusion and sometimes even anger.
Many of the most widespread false memories are rooted in pop culture or are of events that are well known around the world. Though some may seem 33 or are simply a minor detail – or can be put down to basic human error – it is still interesting to see how individual interpretations vary, especially when some inaccuracies are so strange or easy to disprove but are shared by thousands.
Some of the wilder theories suggest that parallel universes could be at play, with a multiverse full of unlimited possibilities, creating chances for every version of events. 34 , more acceptable underlying contributors to this false memory phenomenon could be misinformation, the brain linking events to associated information that alters details of the memory or the human 35 of being inclined to accept the suggestions of other people. The spread of misinformation – especially in the era of the internet – may also be an underlying 36 .
