Desert Birds

Various species of birds inhabit the desert. Many of them possess sandy-brown plumage, allowing them to blend seamlessly with their                          (SURROUND). This natural camouflage aids in their concealment from predators. Among these desert dwellers is the cream-coloured courser, found in arid regions across Africa and parts of Asia.

In the desert, birds often face the challenge of searching for water over long distances. However, this poses a significant obstacle for their fragile chicks. To overcome this predicament, the male sandgrouse has evolved special feathers on its belly that function like sponges, enabling it to retain water. The male sandgrouse takes flight in search of water and                          (THOROUGH) soaks its plumage.

Returning to the nest, he provides a much-needed respite for its                          (THIRST) offspring, as the chicks eagerly consume the water brought by their father.

As for the elf owl, its name derives from its                          (APPEAR) – a diminutive bird measuring only 14 centimeters in length. It constructs its nest within a hole found in a desert cactus. This prickly and                          (COMFORT) abode serves as a protective barrier, safeguarding the owl's eggs from adversaries who are unwilling to navigate through the cactus spines. The elf owl inhabits desert regions in the southwestern United States.
