The History of Moscow

What knowledge do you possess concerning the history of Moscow? The initial documented reference to Moscow                          (FIND) many years ago in the early monastic chronicles, dated to the year 1147. On April 4th, Yuri Vladimirovich Dolgorukiy, the prince of Suzdal, played host to a "grand feast" for his ally, the prince of Novgorod-Seversky, "in Moscow."

This date is widely accepted as the traditional founding date of Moscow, although archaeological findings indicate that a settlement                          (EXIST) there since Neolithic times.

Archaeological excavations have also revealed remnants of roads and evidence of iron and leather craftsmanship from the 11th century. The fortification of the burgeoning settlement was crucial for its protection. In 1156, the first defensive structures were erected on the elevated strip of land between the Moscow River and a small tributary called the Neglinnaya. Presently, the Neglinnaya flows through an underground conduit, but a street bearing the same name                          (TRACE) part of its original course.
