Leadership in college

It is widely emphasized that active involvement in college is crucial. Engaging in organizations and clubs not only helps students develop a sense of connection to their educational institutions but also enhances their resumes, imparts valuable life skills beyond lecture halls, and presents opportunities to forge lifelong friendships.

From the moment I stepped foot on campus as a freshman, I was determined to participate in as many organizations as possible. In January, I assumed the role of a sisterhood director, responsible for organizing events for my chapter, both within our community and the city at large. I have hosted various events, including DIY parties featuring essential oils, yoga classes, movie nights, and farewell gatherings for senior chapter members. I was thrilled about this opportunity, and my previous leadership experiences provided a foundation for my endeavors. However, my perception of leadership among my peers has significantly evolved during my tenure in this position.

Throughout my leadership journey, I have acquired three essential attributes: effective communication, efficient organization, and skillful delegation. I have come to realize that no matter how frequently or diversely a message is conveyed, it may not resonate with everyone, and that's perfectly acceptable.

Transparency is highly valued, and sometimes individuals need explicit expectations. While some individuals possess remarkable organizational skills and can predict events months in advance, others require constant reminders and struggle to keep track of their schedules. This communication gap between these two types of people can lead to frustration and disarray on both ends.

During the past semester, I endeavored to bridge this communication divide and it stands out as one of the most valuable lessons I've learned from my position. It is essential to recognize the time required for every aspect of event planning and execution. Some tasks demand months of preparation and should not be subject to procrastination, while others can be managed on the day itself. Personally, some of my most successful work was accomplished with mere hours to spare. If that is when an individual's productivity thrives, there is no need to avoid it. Procrastination, when coupled with a well-organized plan, can yield favorable outcomes.

The ability to delegate is among the most valuable qualities a competent leader can possess. It is a misconception that leaders must personally handle every step of a project. Delegating tasks to committee members, in my case, proved to be a lifesaver and greatly enriched my role. Collaborating with diverse talents allowed each member to contribute in ways that align with their specific skills, fostering a sense of fulfillment for all involved.

Through both triumphs and missteps in my position, I have gained invaluable knowledge not only about event planning and the members of my chapter but also about effective communication, organization, role modeling, and community engagement. I am immensely grateful for the opportunity that has encouraged me to explore my own capabilities and acquire new skills. This experience has prompted profound reflection on the type of leader I aspire to be in my future career. Holding a leadership position during college is crucial in discovering one's communication style, assessing strengths and weaknesses, and preparing for the realities of the professional world.
