Kevin Stone was driving north on the High Road, towards the mountains. He 30                           on the radio and tuned in to Ask Dr Linda. It was a programme he had no intention of 31                          . It always made him feel better.

When he reached his destination, he remained in his car until the programme was over. Then he sat quietly for several minutes longer before getting out of the car. He walked to the water’s edge. The mountain air was cold and still. The lake surface shone under the autumn sun, but even so, there were dark 32                           that hinted at the water’s depth. The trees surrounding the lake had begun to change colour and were far more vivid in their yellow, orange and red shades than the ones he had 33                           in the city and suburbs closer in. For a long time, he sat on the ground at the lake side, his hands clasped over his knees. 34                           there were tears in his eyes, he ignored them. Then he turned and went back to his car.

An hour later, he was at his mother’s house. He found his mother in her studio. At age sixty she had taken up painting, and in twelve years of serious work, her natural talent had 35                           into a genuine gift. She was seated at the easel, her back to him, every inch of her slight, slender body totally absorbed in her work. She smiled when she saw him but was in no 36                           to start a conversation.
