Solar Power Illuminating the Future for Everyone
My parents opted to purchase and install solar panels on our residence. The entire process was remarkably effortless. To our pleasant surprise, our electric bill for the first month was $100 lower than what we had budgeted. We never thought we would eagerly await our electric bill, but now we do.
Solar power emits no harmful pollutants into the environment. Apart from being environmentally friendly, solar energy is renewable, abundant, sustainable, cost-effective, and continuously advancing. As long as the sun continues to shine, we have the opportunity to harness solar energy, and it is imperative that we seize it.
Solar energy is gaining prominence, with major corporations like Google and Amazon embracing its potential. Renewable energy sources, including solar and wind power, have witnessed a substantial increase in the U.S. energy mix over the past decade. As prominent businesses adopt solar energy, their suppliers are following suit. Apple recently announced that nearly two dozen suppliers of batteries, keyboards, and lenses have committed to 100% renewable energy, inspired by Apple's own commitment.
However, the utilization of solar power should not be limited to large corporations; it should extend to residential homes and educational institutions. Embracing solar energy at homes and colleges is a simple yet impactful way for us to contribute to environmental preservation. Powering a home with solar energy is not significantly more expensive than paying a regular electric bill, and a small additional investment can help safeguard our environment. Many homeowners experience anxiety over their electricity bills as they have no control over their utility rates. While the cost of solar has decreased by over 70% in the last decade, electricity costs have risen by approximately 5%, and this upward trend is expected to continue. Embracing solar energy puts you in the driver's seat when it comes to energy generation.
Implementing solar power in colleges offers benefits not only to the environment but also to the households themselves. Including solar panels increases the average selling price of homes. Research indicates that homes equipped with solar panels sell 20% faster and for 17% higher prices.
Colleges can also greatly benefit from solar energy adoption. If a college's newest residence hall were to fully transition to solar power, students would only need to pay an additional 52 cents per year, assuming the residence hall operates at full capacity.
Investing in clean-energy initiatives would attract many students to colleges. As a generation deeply impacted by climate change, young people are keen on making a difference. A survey revealed that nearly half of young individuals consider climate change and environmental degradation as the most pressing issues, followed by large-scale conflicts and inequality.
Colleges possess the necessary infrastructure to lead the transition to solar energy, with their flat roofs and high population density. Our college, in particular, has already made investments in on-campus solar-energy projects. By further expanding the number of solar-powered buildings on campus, we can significantly redirect the conversation surrounding solar energy.
With its multitude of benefits multiplying rapidly for all stakeholders involved, solar energy is poised to shine brighter than ever before.
