The rise of Moscow as the capital 

In the latter half of the 15th century, Moscow emerged as the undeniable focal point of a united Russian state. Under the rule of Ivan III, the grand prince of Moscow, the Kremlin                          (ENLARGE), with the construction of brick walls spanning over a mile in length and reaching heights of up to 60 feet (18 meters). Furthermore, between 1534 and 1538, the Kitay-gorod, previously                          (PROTECT) by earth banks and palisades, was fortified with a brick wall and 12 towers. As the town                          (GROW), it extended beyond the walls, giving rise to the renowned Bely Gorod, which encircled the Kremlin and Kitay-gorod in a semicircular formation.
